GERAKAN PENINGKATAN RODUKSI DAN MUTU KAKAO NASIONAL; Dalam rangka pengembangan kakao nasional telah ditetapkan program Gerakan Peningkatan Produksi dan Mutu Kakao Nasional. Kegiatan utama dari program tersebut adalah Peremajaan pertanaman kakao yang rusak, Rehabilitasi pertanaman yang kurang baik, dan Intensifikasi pertanaman yang kurang produktif. Kegiatan peremajaan diarahkan untuk status kebun yang rusak berat
yang ditandai dengan tanaman sudah uzur (> 25 tahun), terserang berat oleh hama-penyakit utama, populasi kurang dari 300 pohon/ha, dan produktivitas kurang dari 500 kg/ha, serta masih memenuhi persyaratan kesesuaian lahan untuk kakao. Kegiatan peremajaan telah ditetapkan menggunakan bahan tanaman unggul klonal yang tahan terhadap penyakit utama, khususnya Vascular Streak Dieback (VSD) yang telah menjangkit dan merusak sebagian besar pertanaman kakao.
Penyediaan bahan tanam klonal kakao unggul dapat dilakukan dengan metode setek, sambung bibit dari benih dengan entres klon unggul (sambung pucuk atau tempel tunas/sambung samping), dan dengan metode yang lebih mutakhir yaitu teknik somatic embryogenesis (SE). Ada dua macam proses kultur jaringan tanaman yaitu melalui proses organogenesis atau embriogenesis. Ciri utama dari proses SE adalah pembentukan struktur massa/stuktur bipolar dari eksplan
somatik yang akhirnya membentuk kecambah dengan titik tumbuh akar dan daun pada masing-masing ujungnya secara serempak. Sedangkan proses organogenesis ditandai dengan pembentukan struktur unipolar yaitu hanya pembentukan titik tumbuh daun atau akar secara terpisah..

The development of this theme should lay emphasis on the following requirements: 1). The need to take into consideration the scarcity of land available for cocoa farming; 2). The need to prolong the life span of cocoa trees; 3). The need to produce as much as possible on smaller land area; 4). The need to reduce the effect of pests and diseases through the use of resistant plant material; 5).The need to resort to environment-friendly farming practices; 8). The need to increase the use of cocoa and cocoa by-products; 7).The need to be well informed on and better exploit the benefits of cocoa and cocoa products for human health; 8). The need to reduce or even eliminate the presence of contaminants in cocoa and cocoa derived products; 9). The need to design production management policies in order for supply to be in line with demand; 10). The need to make the functioning of the terminal market and the management of cocoa stocks and cocoa derived products transparent; 11). The need for farmers to achieve remunerative price; 12). ASIC 2010, 23rd International Conference on Coffee Science 1st Announcement; The most important conference on coffee research worldwide will take place in Indonesia from October 3rd to 7th, 2010 at the Grand Ball Room of the Bali Grand Hyatt Hotel, Nusa Dua, Bali, Indonesia.
